On June 20th, Proud Teacher Initiative member José Jimenez was featured on a call-in show special on WNYC called “LGBTQ & the City”. In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall Uprising. WNYC was collecting stories of the LGBTQ community now here in NYC, and what it looks and sounds like in 2019. Jose spoke with host Kai Wright about his experiences as an openly gay public school principal in Queens and how his identity contributes to representation within his school community. He discussed his experiences supporting a student within his school community who had recently come out to his elementary classmates, and how this student’s brave decision is a model for the freedom of expression that we want for all our students. Jose recounts how his own coming out on a bulletin board inspired this student’s journey to come out, and how he hopes his example as a queer, school leader of color will encourage his students and staff to have the space to express their authentic selves in their community.
