Proud Educator

Pia Micoli

Pia Micoli is finishing her fifth year as the K-4 Assistant Principal at the Academy of Arts & Letters, a K-8 public school in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. She joined the Proud Teacher Initiative at its initial meeting, back when she was a 3rd grade classroom teacher and debating the best way to come out to her students and families at a new school. Since then, she has enjoyed being part of the discussion of PTI, both from the angle of teacher and administrator. She believes that increasing the visibility of LGBTQ+ educators in schools will help both educators and students feel supported in bringing their full and authentic selves within school communities. When she’s not obsessing over color-coded spreadsheets or organizing the next Proud Educator Story Night, she might be playing shortstop on her women’s softball team, running in Prospect Park or building things with her hands (like a skin-on-frame canoe). She lives in Prospect Heights with her wife, who is also a Proud Educator and Assistant Principal, and her three-year old daughter.
